4 Warning Signs That You’ve Hired the Wrong Immigration Lawyer
Below are the things that should consider when trying to decide if your current attorney is the right attorney for you.
SIGN # 1
Your lawyer is a really difficult person to connect with or to get along with. Make no mistake about it, in my twenty years as an attorney I have concluded that this profession certainly has its share of attorneys who are bad communicators and who are difficult to get along with. It’s simply the nature of the beast. Many people who choose to spend each and every day in a profession that revolves around fighting and being adversarial are, let’s just say, special! Because the practice of law is adversarial in nature, it can be a pretty negative environment. Because effective communication and connecting with your client are so important to being able to represent a client well, these two shortcomings are certainly a sign that you have hired the wrong lawyer.
SIGN # 2
Your lawyer is lazy! That’s right. I said it. Your lawyer is LAZY! Being a good lawyer is actually a lot of work. Both the facts and law involved in injury cases can be complicated, clients can be demanding, bosses and judges can be difficult, opposing counsel can be, let’s just say, “special”, and some attorneys just give up! They check out! The attorney keeps working because he has to make a living, but he checks out. We’ll call it stress overload. I can tell you that in all my years of practice I have come across a number of “checked out” attorneys, but they are still representing people and taking on cases. Just remember, even a “checked out” attorney will keep your case if he thinks that he can find a successful resolution to it and then get paid on it. But I can almost guarantee you that a checked out lawyer will never get you the best possible resolution.
SIGN # 3
Your lawyer is incompetent! So you ask, how is this possible? How can a lawyer truly be incompetent? After all, a lawyer must spend years in school to get his degree and then he has to pass the Bar Exam to get his license to practice law. Surely someone this smart is able to learn all he needs to know in order to handle your injury case correctly and represent you well? Right? Wrong! When it comes to the facts of a case, immigration cases can be complicated and the law involved can be extremely complex. Having said that, there are lawyers who are willing to take on an immigration case because they mistakenly think that it is straightforward and easy. So incompetency can be a problem because an incompetent lawyer is not aware of his incompetence. He actually thinks that everything is being done correctly because he has no idea what actually needs to be done, and when the case actually resolves you are unaware that the resolution fell short. Think about it this way, if you don’t know what your lawyer should be doing, and he doesn’t know what he should be doing, then who will know when something is done incorrectly.
SIGN # 4
Your “gut” tells you that you have hired the wrong lawyer. Intuition is an amazing thing that we all have and do not pay nearly enough attention to. Listen to your intuition!
These are simply a few signs to watch for if you do not think that you have hired the right lawyer for you. Remember, you can always terminate that relationship and move on to a new attorney who you have confidence in.
